How to Wash Your Nose After Rhinoplasty?

In nose surgeries, we use perforated silicone tampons to help the patient breathe comfortably. If blood clots enter these tampon holes and dry out, the patient cannot breathe comfortably. When regular nasal irrigation is performed, the tampon does not stick to the nasal hairs or stitches. This allows the patient to breathe more comfortably and makes it easier to remove the Tampon.

What is nasal irrigation?

The nasal irrigation procedure should be repeated morning and evening.

  • For the nasal irrigation procedure, you must be in front of the sink.
  • The head should be tilted forward and should not be tilted to the right or left.
  • The ocean water prepared with warm water in a special spray bottle should forcefully be squirted into one of the nostrils. Breathe out gently through the nose.
  • During the squirting process, this water will flow out of the other nostril, and isotonic water may also come out of the mouth from time to time. Therefore, while squirting water into one nostril, the other nostril and mouth should be open.
  • The same procedure should be performed for the other nostril.
  • The edges of the nose should not be touched during this procedure.
  • Then take a pea-sized amount of the softening ointment I prescribed and apply it to the nostrils using a cotton bud, gently removing any clotted layers.

Short-term bleeding may occur after washing. This is normal, but if the bleeding lasts longer than 3-4 minutes, the patient should contact me.
