It is important for the individual to have completed bone development before undergoing deviated septum surgery. Bone development is completed at the earliest between the ages of 16 and 18 in girls and between 18 and 20 in boys, and only after this can a septum deviation operation be performed. However, surgery may be recommended earlier if severe breathing problems, sleep issues, or recurring sinus infections affect quality of life.

During the pre-operative examination, ENT specialist Op. Dr. Ümit Küçüktepe will provide you with detailed information and inform you of any special circumstances that may apply to you.
Pediatric deviated septum surgery
If a child's deviated septum is the result of trauma, surgical intervention can be performed immediately after the injury.
Although very rare, deviation surgery is also performed on children without trauma. If a child experiences serious breathing or developmental problems due to a deviated nose, deviated septum surgery can also be performed on them.
Can I get a septoplasty at 15?
For deviated septum surgery, the individual must have completed their bone and cartilage development. Surgery performed at an early age may require reoperation because nasal tissue development is ongoing. Bone and cartilage development is completed at an average age of 16-18 in girls and 18-21 in boys. Therefore, if the necessary tests show that bone development is complete, surgery can be performed on individuals who wish to undergo deviated septum surgery.
What age can you get rhinoplasty?
In all rhinoplasty procedures, it is important that the individual has completed bone development. Nose surgery can be performed as early as 18 years of age, and there is no upper age limit.
How does our nose shape change with age?
Although bone and cartilage development do not complete at the same time, growth is generally complete by the age of 18. The nose is the slowest organ to develop and the last to complete it. Depending on the individual's developmental characteristics, this development may be completed before or after the age of 18. In males, nose development is most often complete by the age of 21.
How to fix nasal bone sticking out?
A nasal bone sticking out will not resolve on its own or with home remedies. The only treatment for a nasal bone sticking is nasal surgery. Septoplasty can correct deviations in the nose. This surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The result is a surgery that will satisfy the patient both functionally and aesthetically.
How serious is surgery to fix a deviated septum?
A deviated septum surgery is not difficult for either the patient or an experienced surgeon. You can ask Op. Dr Ümit Küçüktepe, who is renowned in the field of nose surgery, any questions you may have about the operation during your consultation.
A deviated septum surgery takes approximately half an hour. To give the patient a more aesthetically pleasing nose, the cartilage and bone tissues are adjusted. To ensure comfortable breathing, the nasal turbinates are also adjusted in addition to the cartilage and bone tissues. Once the recovery period is complete, the patient will enjoy the benefits of comfortable breathing thanks to the turbinate surgery performed.
How risky is deviated septum surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries a certain amount of risk. However, it is not considered a high-risk operation. Patients must be very careful during the recovery period following rhinoplasty. Incorrect behaviour can directly affect the success of an operation.
What are the dangers of a deviated septum?
A deviated nasal septum is aesthetically unappealing. It leads to aesthetic concerns for the patient. The presence of a deviated nasal septum in a patient may cause:
- Nasal congestion,
- Difficulty breathing,
- Developmental delay,
- Sinusitis,
- Snoring and sleep apnoea.
How long does it take to recover from a deviated septum surgery?
Following surgery for a deviated septum, the new-generation silicone nasal splints used as nasal packing are usually removed on the fifth day. Within a week or two, the patient will breathe more comfortably. It takes 5-6 months for the procedure to fully settle and for the bones to fuse.
Can a deviated septum worsen over time?
Nasal bone development continues until the individual's bone development is complete. The development of nasal bone curvature lasts until approximately 18 years of age. Once bone development is complete, no further progression of the curvature is observed.
What happens if a deviated septum is not treated?
If a deviated septum is not treated, the individual cannot breathe comfortably. This impairs sleep quality and can cause conditions such as dry throat, pharyngitis, and sinus infections, as it leads to breathing pauses during sleep and mouth breathing. It can result in insufficient oxygen intake.
What can a deviated septum lead to?
A deviated septum can cause an individual to experience many different problems at once. These include sleep apnoea, snoring, headaches, nosebleeds, difficulty breathing, sinusitis, ear health problems, and postnasal drip.
